The single most useful thing to know about an A3 scanner for artwork is what kind of sensor is behind the glass, and the Plustek OS1180 has the right one. Contact image sensors (CIS) are cheap, thin, and sharp only for originals pressed flat against the glass. Charge-coupled device (CCD) sensors use a lens and mirror path, which gives them real depth of field: a sheet of 300 gsm cold-press paper with a ripple in it, a pastel that cannot be pressed down, or a drawing mounted on a board all stay in focus. Before you spend $340 on an A3 bed, be honest about how often you will use it. If the answer is a few times a year, a letter-size flatbed and twenty minutes in Photoshop's Photomerge does the job.
