Old Town is the original Port Aransas — the compact grid between the harbor and the beach where the town's fishing-village bones still show: bait stands, seafood counters, beach cottages from the fifties sitting next to new builds on stilts. Staying here means being in the town, not just near the beach, and that's the distinction that decides the trip.
Rent a golf cart the day you arrive; it IS the transportation. The whole town runs on them — restaurants have cart parking, kids pile in for the ice cream run, and the beach entrance ramps take carts right onto the sand. A house without a cart in Port A is a house with its shoes tied together.
Beach access from Old Town runs down the Avenue G corridor and the numbered ramps — a few minutes by cart from most cottages. You trade the condo towers' elevator-to-sand convenience for walking to dinner, the harbor at sunset, and the deep-sea charter fleet a few blocks away.
Fishing is the town's soul, not a sideline. Half-day bay trips, jetty fishing, deep-sea charters out of the harbor — build one into the week even if nobody in the crew has held a rod. The cleaning stations at the marina at four p.m. are free theater.
Local Intel
Book the golf cart when you book the house — the rental fleets sell out on summer and holiday weeks, and arriving cartless in July means a waitlist. Most cottage listings will tell you which cart outfit they use; go with that one.
Skip
Skip Old Town if the group's vision is stepping from a balcony elevator straight onto sand — that's the condo towers' product. Old Town's product is the town itself, with the beach a five-minute cart ride away.
