The trade-off is that it's the busy side. Summer Saturdays hum, the boat traffic stages from here, and the main drag moves slow at dinnertime. If the whole point of the lake is silence, look at Mabank or Tool and drive in for supplies.

The north end around Mabank is where the lake calms down — narrower water, more coves, and neighborhoods where the docks outnumber the boats actually moving. It's the same lake with the volume turned down a notch, and the crowd here rebooks the same houses year after year.

Mabank itself sits just off the water with a small-town square worth an unhurried hour — the antique-store, cafe, and feed-store version of East Texas that pairs well with a lake morning. It's the kind of errand-turned-outing that fills the one non-boat afternoon of the weekend.

The cove-heavy shoreline suits paddlers and dock anglers: protected water for kayaks and paddleboards when the main basin gets its afternoon chop, and quiet pockets where the crappie fishing off private docks is genuinely good.

Stock skews toward family lake houses rather than party barns, and rates run a shade under Gun Barrel for comparable water. It's the pick for trips where the porch matters as much as the boat.

Tool runs down the lake's west shore, and its geography is its argument: the docks face east across the widest water, which means sunrise over the lake with your coffee and — because the evening light comes from behind the house and lands on the water — long, gold, glare-free evenings on the dock. The west shore is where the porch crowd settles.

This is the value side of the lake. Comparable dock-front houses routinely run under the Gun Barrel and Mabank equivalents, largely because Tool is a quiet residential strip rather than a town with a strip — you drive for groceries and dinners out, and the rates thank you for it.

The character is old-school lake neighborhood: modest houses with serious docks, boat lifts, and fish-cleaning stations, mixed with newer builds as DFW money works its way around the shoreline. Listings here are honest about being fishing-first houses, which is refreshing.

Open water is right off the dock — the west shore fronts the lake's big basin, so skiers, tubers, and wakeboarders launch into the good water immediately rather than idling out of a cove.
