Large and Oversized Canvas Sizes for Painting: 30 x 40 to 72 x 96

Every standard big canvas size in inches and centimeters, with the numbers that matter once a painting gets large: the stretcher depth it needs, whether it will ship as a parcel, whether it will make it up your stairs, and when it is cheaper to stretch your own.

Standard large canvas sizes

Large starts at 30 x 40 inches for a practical reason: it is the first size where a standard 3/4 inch stretcher bar is no longer stiff enough, so the whole construction changes. The table lists every common stock size from there up, with the area (useful for pricing, since paint and canvas both scale with square feet) and the diagonal, which is the number that decides whether a canvas turns a corner in a hallway.

Large panoramic sizes

Long, low canvases span a sofa or a bed without climbing the wall, and they are easier to carry because the short side stays under 48 inches. The diagonal still grows, so a 48 x 96 turns a stairwell no better than a 72 x 72.

Stretcher bar depth for large canvases

Depth is the difference between a large canvas that stays flat for decades and one that warps in a year. A stretcher bar resists twisting in proportion to its depth, and a canvas under tension pulls the bars inward with a force that grows with the length of the side. Standard 3/4 inch bars handle sides up to about 36 inches. After that, move to 1.5 inch gallery bars, and from 48 inches up to heavy duty bars that are 2 inches or deeper with a wide face. Cross braces stop the long bars from bowing toward each other.

Keyed corners matter at this scale. A keyed stretcher has small wooden wedges in each corner that push the bars outward to re-tighten the canvas as it slackens with humidity. Fixed (glued) corners cannot be tightened, so a large canvas on fixed bars will eventually need restretching. Most pre-stretched canvases over 36 x 48 use keyed bars; check the listing.

Rolled canvas and building your own

Above 36 x 48, most working painters stop buying pre-stretched canvas and build their own. The reasons are cost, shipping and control: a roll of primed cotton and a set of heavy duty bars cost a fraction of a pre-stretched canvas at the same size, they ship as ordinary parcels, and you choose the depth, the brace layout and the surface. Primed cotton rolls come 54, 60, 72, 84, 96 and 120 inches wide, in lengths from 3 yards up.

To size the cut, add the bar depth plus 2 inches to every side, so for 1.5 inch bars add 7 inches to each dimension (3.5 inches per side: 1.5 to wrap the edge and 2 to staple on the back). The table shows the cut size and the narrowest standard roll that fits it. Cut the canvas so the roll width covers the shorter dimension and the length runs down the roll.

The tools are simple: heavy duty stretcher bars in the right lengths, a cross brace, canvas pliers, a staple gun with 3/8 inch staples, and a large square to check the corners before you staple. Start each side from the center and work out, alternating sides, and pull the canvas with the pliers rather than your fingers so the tension stays even. A Utrecht heavy duty 48 inch bar ($51.24 each) is the kind of bar the 48 inch and larger sizes call for; buy two of each length, plus a brace.

The one tool you cannot skip

Shipping limits and doorway math

UPS and FedEx both cap ground parcels at 108 inches in length and 165 inches in length plus girth (length plus twice the width plus twice the depth), and both add a large package surcharge above 130 inches of length plus girth. The table works that out for a stretched canvas in a box 2 inches larger than the canvas on each side and 3 inches deep. Check the carriers' current rules before you quote a client, but the pattern holds: stretched canvases stop being parcels somewhere between 40 x 60 and 48 x 60.

The last row is why oversized paintings travel rolled. Roll paint side out, so the paint layer is in tension rather than compression and less likely to crack, around the widest tube you can find, with glassine or clean cotton between the layers. Acrylics should be fully cured first; oils should be dry to the touch for months.

Doorways follow the same logic. A standard US interior door opening is 80 inches tall and 28 to 32 inches wide; exterior doors are 36 inches wide. A stretched canvas passes through any door if its short side is under about 78 inches, because you carry it on edge and the width of the door does not matter. What stops a large canvas is the turn: a hallway corner, a landing, an elevator. For a turn, the canvas diagonal has to fit the space available, which is why the table above lists diagonals. A 36 x 48 (60 inch diagonal) turns almost any corner; a 60 x 72 (94 inches) will not make most residential staircases; a 72 x 96 (120 inches) needs a straight shot from the truck to the wall, and stood on end it touches an 8 foot (96 inch) ceiling.

Where to buy large canvases

Amazon stocks the large sizes up to 48 x 60 from a dozen brands, with 48 x 72 and 60 x 72 from a few, and it is the cheapest place for the value packs at 30 x 40 and 36 x 48. Blick, Jerry's Artarama and Utrecht carry stock sizes to 72 x 96 and offer custom stretching in any dimension, shipped freight. A local frame shop will custom stretch from your roll or theirs, which avoids shipping altogether and is the right answer for anything over 48 x 60. For a large canvas you intend to sell, check that the listing says the bars are kiln dried and keyed; that detail separates a professional stretch from a decor product.
