Canvas Sizes by Aspect Ratio: 3:4, 2:3, 4:5, 16:9 and Square

Standard canvas sizes look random until you sort them by shape. Nearly all of them fall into five ratios, and knowing which ratio you are holding tells you what photos fit it, what frames fit it, and what will hang beside it without looking off.

How to read an aspect ratio

An aspect ratio is the relationship between a canvas's short side and its long side, written as two numbers with a colon. To find it, divide both sides by their greatest common factor. A 16 x 20 canvas divides by 4 to give 4:5. An 18 x 24 divides by 6 to give 3:4. A 24 x 36 divides by 12 to give 2:3. An 11 x 14 has no common factor, so its ratio is simply 11:14.

The decimal form is more useful for comparing shapes: divide the short side by the long side. 4:5 is 0.80, 3:4 is 0.75, 2:3 is 0.667, 1:2 is 0.50 and a square is 1.00. Two canvases with the same decimal have the same shape at any size, which is why an 8 x 10 photo enlarges to 16 x 20 or 24 x 30 without cropping but not to 18 x 24. Square canvas sizes (1:1)

Squares are the ratio people search for most, and the one with the widest run of sizes. They hang well in pairs and grids because the shape reads the same from any distance, and they suit subjects that fill the frame: florals, abstracts, portraits cropped tight. Instagram trained a generation to compose square, and a photo shot square on a phone fits any of these sizes without cropping.

4:5 canvas sizes

The 4:5 family is the photographer's ratio. It matches 8 x 10 and 16 x 20 prints, 4 x 5 large format film, and the portrait post on Instagram. It is slightly squarer than 3:4, which makes it a comfortable portrait shape: enough height for head and shoulders, not so tall that it reads as a door. 16 x 20 is the most popular canvas size sold in the US, and it sits in this family.

3:4 canvas sizes

The 3:4 family is the painter's workhorse and the phone photographer's friend. Sketch pads, canvas panels and student canvases cluster here (9 x 12, 12 x 16, 18 x 24), the two common large sizes are here (30 x 40, 36 x 48), and the default 4:3 photo from nearly every phone and micro four thirds camera fills a 3:4 canvas exactly. 18 x 24 is also a standard poster and frame size, so framing is easy.

2:3 canvas sizes

The 2:3 family is the shape of a 35 mm negative, a full frame or APS-C sensor, and a 4 x 6 print. It is the longest of the common rectangles, which is why 24 x 36 is the default large canvas over a sofa: the extra length spans furniture better than 3:4 or 4:5. A camera photo prints onto any of these sizes with no cropping, and 20 x 30 and 24 x 36 are both standard poster sizes.

5:7, 11:14 and the in-between ratios

A handful of standard sizes do not simplify to a small ratio. They exist because they are photo print sizes (5 x 7, 11 x 14) or old frame sizes (14 x 18, 20 x 24, 22 x 28), and they only share their shape with one or two other sizes. That matters when you enlarge: an 11 x 14 photo does not scale cleanly to anything except 22 x 28.

Panoramic canvas sizes (1:2 and 1:3)

Panoramics are twice or three times as long as they are tall. They fill the space over a sofa, headboard or mantel where a rectangle would leave dead wall on either side, and they suit landscapes, skylines and horizontal abstracts. Photos need heavy cropping to fit them: a 3:2 photo loses a quarter of its height going to 1:2 and half of it going to 1:3.

16:9 canvas sizes

16:9 is the shape of an HD or 4K screen, and people search for it because they want to hang a video still or a digital painting made at screen proportions. The exact sizes exist, but they are rarely stocked, and a stock floater frame will not fit them. Your practical options are to order a custom stretch, or to crop to the nearest stocked shape: a 1:2 panoramic is a little wider than 16:9 (0.50 against 0.5625), and 2:3 is a little taller (0.667). Going 16:9 to 2:3 trims 15.6 percent off the width; going 16:9 to 1:2 trims 11.1 percent off the height.

Which ratios match photo and print sizes

If you are printing a photo on canvas, the ratio decides whether you crop. Full frame and APS-C cameras shoot 3:2, so they match the 2:3 canvases. Phones and micro four thirds cameras shoot 4:3, so they match the 3:4 canvases. Medium format 6 x 6 film and square phone shots match the squares. Nothing common shoots 4:5, which is why 8 x 10 and 16 x 20 always need a small crop.

The math behind the table: when the canvas is squarer than the photo, the photo's long side is cropped, and the fraction lost is 1 minus the photo's decimal ratio divided by the canvas's. A 3:2 photo (0.667) onto a 4:5 canvas (0.80) loses 1 minus 0.667 divided by 0.80, which is 16.7 percent. In inches, a 3:2 photo scaled to a 16 inch short side is 24 inches long, and the 16 x 20 canvas cuts 4 of those inches away.

How aspect ratio affects framing

Frame stock follows the same ratios as canvas stock, so a canvas in one of the big five families has a floater frame available off the shelf: 8 x 10, 16 x 20, 18 x 24 and 24 x 36 are all stocked. A 16:9 or 24 x 32 canvas needs a custom frame. Our standard picture frame sizes chart lists which frames are stocked and which are special order.

Ratio also decides how a piece sits on the wall. Squarer shapes (1:1, 4:5) read as objects and work alone or in grids; longer shapes (2:3, 1:2) read as horizons and work over furniture. When you mix ratios on one wall, keep either the height or the width constant across the pieces so the eye has a line to follow.
