Thirty-five minutes gets you Driftwood wine country; an hour gets you Wimberley's creekside porches; two hours gets you the cypress-lined upper Guadalupe at Kerrville. When the group chat says 'we should all get a place,' this is the place. Lake Travis has the deepest group-house inventory near Austin, houses that sleep 8 to 16 with hot tubs and decks aimed at the water, plus a mature boat-rental market so nobody needs to own anything. Split across a full house, the per-person math routinely embarrasses hotel rooms.

The one thing to respect is the lake level, which fluctuates by design on Travis; book the house and views first and treat a dock as a bonus, or go Lake LBJ (constant-level) when dock-swimming is the whole trip. Both are covered in our lake guides.

New Braunfels runs on two rivers: the spring-fed Comal, short, clear, and reliably swimmable, and the Guadalupe below Canyon Lake, the famous tubing run. Add Schlitterbahn, the Gruene Historic District, and Gruene Hall, Texas's oldest continually operating dance hall, and you have the most concentrated classic-Texas weekend within an hour of Austin.

Rentals cluster between the rivers and around Gruene, and summer Saturdays are the region's Mardi Gras: book weeks ahead, expect crowds on the water, and know that the same trip in early June or September is half as hectic. Off-season, the town quietly becomes a great cheap couples weekend, dance hall included. In November, Wurstfest turns the town's German heritage into a ten-day festival worth planning around, in either direction.

Fredericksburg is the getaway that fills two full days without repeating itself: the biggest winery corridor in Texas along US 290, a real German-settled Main Street, the National Museum of the Pacific War, and Enchanted Rock 20 minutes north for the sunrise climb. It ranks fourth only because it costs and demands more than the cabin weekend; on pure completeness it is first.

Port Aransas on Mustang Island is Austin's de facto home beach: a golf-cart-scaled town where the ferry ride in is part of the ritual, the beach is wide and driveable, and the rental stock runs from old-school beach cottages to big stilted houses that sleep the whole family reunion. Fishing charters, birding, and beach bonfire evenings fill the days without an itinerary.

The drive is the tax, 3.5 to 4 hours each way, which is why this is a three-night trip, not a two-night one. Do it over a long weekend and the math flips: the same coastal reset that would cost a flight anywhere else is a tank of gas and a ferry queue away.

Last on the list, first in frequency: the staycation is the getaway you can actually take this weekend. The ladder has three rungs. Rung one, a hotel-pool day pass, from about $25, which buys you the same deck a $400-a-night guest uses. Rung two, one night in a downtown hotel, walk to dinner, sleep in, rooftop pool morning. Rung three, a Vrbo across town, east side if you live north, lake side if you live central, which is a genuinely different weekend for the cost of a tank of gas you did not burn.
