New Braunfels Cabins & Rentals

Downtown New Braunfels is the walkable tier — the historic square, the beer gardens, and the Comal River all inside a few blocks. The Comal is the shortest major river in Texas and possibly its most pleasant: spring-fed at a constant 70–72°F, gentle enough for small kids, and floatable in about two to three hours end to end without ever leaving town.

The houses that put you within walking distance of a Comal access point are the ones to fight for. Park the car Friday evening and it doesn't move again — float in the morning, lunch on the square, Schlitterbahn or the pool in the afternoon. No shuttle logistics, no parking wars.

Schlitterbahn is the other anchor: the original location of the famous waterpark sits right on the Comal's banks, and summer houses nearby book with families making it the centerpiece day. If the park is on your itinerary, walking distance is worth a real premium over a fifteen-minute drive and a parking lot.

The stock is a mix — restored German-heritage cottages near the square, mid-century houses on the river streets, and newer builds — and the character of the old-town blocks is part of the product. This is the tier we default to for first trips and any group with kids under ten.

Gruene is technically a New Braunfels neighborhood and spiritually its own town — a preserved 1870s cotton-gin district on a bluff over the Guadalupe, anchored by the oldest continuously operating dance hall in Texas. Live music runs nearly nightly at Gruene Hall, often free in the afternoons, and dinner in the converted gristmill overlooking the river is the area's signature evening.

Cabins and cottages within walking distance of the hall are the most-wanted inventory in the whole market, and they behave like it: they book early, they price at the top of the range, and on big ticketed show nights they sell out with the concert. Check the hall's calendar the moment you pick dates — in either direction.

The Guadalupe below the bluff is the calm lower stretch, better as scenery and a gentle paddle than a party float. Gruene works as the elegant end of a river trip: float elsewhere in the day, come home to dinner and a two-step.

This is dance hall country in the truest sense — the weekend rhythm is built around who's playing. For couples, a Gruene cottage plus a show plus the bluff dinner is the single most reliable special-occasion formula in Central Texas.

River Road runs north out of New Braunfels along the Guadalupe toward Canyon Dam — the famous cypress-lined corridor where the outfitters cluster and the classic Texas float happens. Staying on this stretch means stepping off a porch into the day's run instead of shuttling from town.

This is the cold river. Dam releases from deep in Canyon Lake hold the Guadalupe in the 60s°F all summer — a gift in August, a shock in May — and the float itself depends on the release flow rate. Check the current flow before committing a float weekend; a low-release day is a slow scrape and a big-release day runs fast.

The corridor's culture is the party float, especially on summer weekends between the crossings — coolers, floatillas, music. If that's the trip, book in the middle of it; if you want the river quieter, stay at the corridor's edges or float midweek. Location relative to your outfitter's section matters more than the cabin itself, so match the crossing to the operator before you book.

Southeast of town, the Guadalupe widens into a chain of small constant-level lakes — McQueeney and Dunlap are the two with the rental stock — and they are a different water world from the rivers: warm, calm, glassy in the mornings, and built for skiing, wakeboarding, and kids jumping off docks all afternoon.

The dock is the product. These are old family-lake-house lakes, and the best rentals come with the full setup — boathouse, lift, swim ladder, a shaded deck over the water — so the house itself is the day's entertainment. For multi-generation groups, that beats any river logistics: nobody shuttles, nobody checks a flow rate, the water is always there.

McQueeney is the bigger name with the longer ski-boat tradition; Dunlap is smaller and a touch quieter since its dam was rebuilt and the lake refilled. On either, morning water is the glass — ski early, swim the afternoon chop.

You're still only fifteen to twenty minutes from downtown New Braunfels and Gruene, so the lake-house week loses nothing: a Comal float, a Schlitterbahn day, and a dance-hall night all slot in as day trips from a base where the kids never want to leave the dock anyway.
