From the square, the lake is two blocks east — a city beach and boardwalk stretch that makes an easy sunset walk — and Glen Rose's dinosaur country is twenty-five minutes southwest. Base here and both day trips come to you.

Lake Granbury is a long, narrow river-channel lake — the dammed Brazos winding right through town — which changes what a lake house means here. Instead of open-water chop, you get calm coves, protected channels, and docks off the back porch; instead of a marina drive, the square's restaurants are minutes away by car or, from some stretches, by boat.

Dock-front is the tier that matters. Glen Rose is the family-magic zone, and it doesn't need embellishment: Dinosaur Valley State Park protects genuine dinosaur tracks pressed into the limestone bed of the Paluxy River, and when the water runs low you stand in the river and put your hand in a footprint older than comprehension. It is, reliably, the kids' trip of the year.

The honesty note that separates this guide from the brochures: the tracks are in a living river. Low water — most dependable in summer — exposes the main track sites; after rains and in wet seasons, high water hides them entirely. Build the trip around a low-water window if the tracks are the promise, and check park conditions before you drive.

Fossil Rim Wildlife Center is the other anchor and it works in any weather — a respected conservation center running a drive-through safari where giraffes, rhinos and dozens of species work the hills and the giraffes lean into the car window at the feeding stops. Book the drive for morning, when the animals are active and the light is good.

The town itself stays small and river-shaped: Big Rocks Park's giant limestone boulders on the Paluxy make a free swim-and-scramble afternoon, and the cabin stock runs to river cottages and ranch guest houses rather than resorts. Summer books earliest; spring and fall are the value windows if the tracks aren't the mission.
