The thermostat's original sin is location: it reads the temperature of a hallway and imposes that reading on the bedrooms. Ecobee built its reputation attacking exactly that, and the Premium is the most complete version of the fix. The bundled SmartSensor goes in the room you care about, the nursery, the office, the bedroom that bakes every afternoon, and the system averages or follows occupancy so comfort lands where people actually are. Add the built-in air quality monitor and onboard voice control, and this is less a thermostat than a small climate computer.
Against the new Nest Learning below, the Ecobee's case is depth: more granular scheduling, more sensor logic, more things you can actually adjust. In a Texas summer, where the difference between a smart and a dumb cooling schedule shows up directly on an electric bill, that depth pays for itself. It slots into the same ecosystem conversation as our smart lock rankings, and for whole-home coverage the SmartSensor two-pack below is the natural add-on.
Our Pick
The most complete thermostat you can put on a wall. The Premium ships with a SmartSensor for the room that actually matters, monitors indoor air quality, has Siri and Alexa built into the unit itself, and runs the deepest scheduling and comfort logic in the category. It wins on substance rather than sculpture.
Homes where one room always runs hot or cold, which is most homes. The bundled remote sensor means the system heats and cools for where you actually are, not for the hallway the thermostat happens to hang in.
What we don't like
Homes without a C-wire need Ecobee's included power extender kit installed at the furnace, a real but manageable step we walk through below. The industrial-design crowd still gives Nest the beauty prize.
