The Story

Southern Indiana, October 1955. The back roads between Nashville and Bloomington are unpaved and barely marked. You find them by the color — whole hillsides turning at once, sugar maples going from green to copper to a red so deep it stops you mid-sentence.

Somewhere on one of those roads, a painter named Lauchlan Donaldson set up his panel and went to work.

He didn't fuss. You can see it in the paint — laid down fast, in thick strokes, while the light was still right. The kind of brushwork that happens when someone knows exactly what they're looking at and doesn't want to lose it. The maple is the anchor. Everything else — the gold tree beside it, the road disappearing into blue hills, the clouds piled up like something out of a Midwestern summer that forgot to leave — arranges itself around that single blazing tree.

You can see it in the paint — laid down fast, in thick strokes, while the light was still right.

The back reads: "Down Indiana Way" by Donaldson 1955. That's all. No gallery stamp, no exhibition label. Just a man, a title, and a year. The painting did the rest.

It's been seventy years. The frame is the original — a warm, carved profile that somebody chose with care. Nothing has been restored. Nothing needed to be.
